The first town we'll visit is Saramacca in Groningen, where the residents make their living by raising cattle and cultivating fruits and vegetables. In the next town, Coronie, inhabitants used to produce coconuts for a living. Only a few individuals are left in this region these days due to the difficulty of living and the lack of interest in the processing of coconuts. The majority of them migrated to Paramaribo in search of a brighter future for their families. In Nickerie, we go from the coconut culture to the rice culture. Nickerie's capital, Nieuw Nickerie, has a population of around 30.000, making it Suriname's second-largest city. Nature and bird-watchers alike will enjoy the Bigipan Nature Reserve near Nickerie. Many bird species, such as the Red Ibis, breed in the nature reserve.
