The Roman town held a distinctive defensive posture. Cuicul is one of the blossoms of Roman architecture in North Africa. Remarkably suited to the restrictions of the mountainous site, on a rocky spur which stretches at a height of 900 m, between the wadi Guergour and the wadi Betame, two mountain rivers, the town has its own Senate and Forum. Around the beginning of the 3rd century, it grew outside its ramparts with the erection of the Septimius Severus Temple, the Arch of Caracalla, the market and the civic basilica. The site has also been impacted by Christianity in the shape of multiple religious buildings: a cathedral, a church and its baptistry are regarded among the largest of the Paleochristian period. The site of Djémila has an outstanding collection of mosaic pavings, portraying mythical tales and images of daily life.
